hello, I (f19) have been dating my bf (m20) for a bit over two years. and recently we talked about moving in together.
  • 02
However, his mom has been dating a guy who's allergic to cats (severe allergy, he gets bed ridden, and over the last few months its been getting worse), i have had my cat (f3) for 3 years, she's really important to me, and i have a responsibility.

Well, his mom asked him to ask me if i could consider giving my cat away, my mom doesn't live far away and they're suggesting that i give her to my mom..
  • 05
(my mom has a dog, they do not get along well) When my boyfriend suggested it the first time i was livid, i said no.
  • 06
He told me that if i have a cat we cant move together(cause then he cant visit his mom), i told him that i don't wanna move together then, cause this means we as people are not ready.
  • 07
however, 2 days ago he brought it up again, and i told him no again. i can tell he thinks im somewhat selfish, and a few of our friends have told me i am being stubborn.

Adept Mission_4829 Please explain how he can visit you without bringing cat hair back to his mother's appartment? Basically you are asked to respect boyfriend's mom's lover's needs over your own. Not sensible. Your boyfriend does not stick up for you and your cat despite having known you guys for a while. Would be a deal breaker for me. Do you live alone and earn your living? If so you are doing good, keep it that way, Catwoman!

OP Ok-Ninja-3499 He cant, i forgot to write it in the post, but he said he cant come to visit me that much anymore, he showers and changes his clothes when he gets home, still his moms bf gets an allergy reaction

Equivalent-Shake-77 Never get rid of a pet for a partner, in this case your partners mothers boyfriend. Shower, clean clothes then visit his mother, problem solved. Btw, If your bf wouldn't be able to visit his mum, how does he visit you then go back there without an issue currently?

ejcg1996 He can't VISIT his mom if you own a cat? Does he know how allergies work? If the boyfriend is bedridden he needs to see a doctor.
  • 15
OP Ok-Ninja-3499 they say its really severe allergies

lordemme So has he always been his mom's BF for the last 2 years? Because otherwise why would things have changed recently when you'd think about living together? Either way, if you're attached to your cat (and why wouldn't you), I think your relationship is no longer working out.
  • 18
OP Ok-Ninja-3499 This is the one time he's been like this, I think he's happy his mom has found someone and is scared it's not gonna work out if I don't get rid of my cat, cause he told me his mom was gonna break up with her bf cause she prioritises his relationship over her own.

No_Cockroach_2744 Why can't he take a shower and wear clean clothes when he visits her?
  • 20
OP Ok-Ninja-3499 He does, it still doesn't help cause his mothers bf is severely allergic and it's gotten even worse lately
  • 21
Wizdug98 You dont have to live with his family. You can always go into your own place. I get moms boyfriend is deathly ill. But who is your relationship with him or family. Besides its selfish to ask anyone to give up their pet for a relationship. If boyfriend knew this before hand and not tell you of moms boyfriend condition that is not nice.
  • 22
OP Ok-Ninja-3499 Neither me or my bf knew of his allergies, we didn't meet him before last year, but they've apparently been dating for the same amount ca as me and my bf
  • 23
Fioreborn How does that mean go outside then? Because he'll come across people when he's put who have cat hair on them. Also as others have pointed out, your bf cares more about his mum's bf than you.
  • 24
OP Ok-Ninja-3499 I mean, it is his mom, in my culture as well, family is so important.. doesn't mean I'd prioritise my mom over him though, well maybe now >

Big_Somewhere_620 don't move in with him. The cat won't be in a space where his mom would visit and you can keep your cat. Think it's weird you can't move in with cat because he can't visit her? If you are dating him and he visits you he's picking up cat hair anyway so I think the issue isn't the allergy it's control and someone just doesn't want it there
  • 27
OP Ok-Ninja-3499 He's said that he can't visit me that much anymore either if I have a cat

Brighton_Spores Keep the cat, get rid of the boyfriend. It's that simple. If you do the opposite, keep the boyfriend and get rid of the cat. please remember my post and when it all falls apart, please answer this one question... Who do you miss more, the boyfriend or the cat?

CaptDeliciousPants Asking you to get rid of your cat for someone you don't even live with is ridiculous. I wouldn't even trust them around my cat after they kept bringing it up.
